Macleans College students meet war veteran John Sato

Posted on April 29, 2019

As part of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), Year 12 commerce students Aleena Waqar (Snell House), Ermina Tajik (Rutherford) and Sophia Su (Rutherford) formed a company called INU which aims to create a smart drink bottle which measures how much water you drink.

The aim is to operate the business throughout the year and gain points to qualify for the finals to be held in Wellington in Term Four. To ensure success the company engaged a business mentor, former Macleans College student Bo Burns (Mansfield House 1992 – 1995) and through her they came into contact with John Sato, a 95 year old veteran of World War Two. He was one of only two Japanese soldiers who fought in the New Zealand Army.

The students had the opportunity to meet John Sato in Auckland earlier this month at the Rally against Racism which took place following the Christchurch attacks. The Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern also attended the event.

During their meeting with John Sato they presented him with a bouquet of flowers and a tin of ANZAC cookies on behalf of Macleans College. They also had a conversation with the Prime Minister as well as Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga, who was also present.

The YES teachers who oversee this at school are Mr Caley and Mr Askin.
