Macleans College Students Introduced to Humanitarian Engineering

Posted on June 28, 2019

On Wednesday 26 June a group of volunteers from the University of Auckland’s Engineers Without Borders School’s Programme visited Macleans College to run a Science/Geography focused session with the Year 10 extension classes.

Two of the volunteers were former Macleans College students – Samuel Que (Mansfield House 2013 - 2017) and Lucy Shen (Mansfield 2013 - 2016).

They introduced the students to the idea of humanitarian engineering – working with people in a design process to come up with solutions that suited the client and the environment.  Students were given a brief to design and build a model house for the people of Tonlé Sap, a flood prone region of Cambodia.  The model had to support a large number of marbles and be built within a budget.  Extra points were awarded for saving money.  Competition was fierce and testing was done with good humour.
