Macleans College student to represent New Zealand at International Biology Olympiad

Posted on April 27, 2023

Year 13 student Allan Han (Batten House) has been selected as part of the team to represent New Zealand at the 34th International Biology Olympiad.

This year the Olympiad will be held in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates from 3 – 11 July. Hundreds of students from over 80 countries will be participating, each having worked through their respective selection processes.

Allan is one of only four biology students in the country to be selected for the team. As part of the selection process, he took part in a 10-day practical training camp at the University of Auckland in the April school holidays. The camp offered a full programme of laboratory sessions, seminars with some of New Zealand’s top scientists, and fieldwork at Tāwharanui Regional Park and Leigh Marine Reserve. The camp concluded with a several hour practical and theoretical exam.

This follows his selection for the New Zealand Chemistry Olympiad team in 2022. Hosted by Tianjin, China, Allan gained a bronze medal.

Thank you to Mrs Humphreys for her organisation of the Biology Olympiad at Macleans College this year.
