Posted on September 21, 2023
On Saturday 9 September the Auckland regional semi-final of the 2023 Aotearoa New Zealand Spelling Bee was held at the Uxbridge Theatre in Howick.
The top Year 9 and Year 10 spellers from across Auckland came together to compete for one of five places in the New Zealand final, to be held in Wellington.
Macleans College was represented by six students Eliana Koh (Upham House), Ella Park (Hillary), Richard Tao (Kupe), Edwin Shen (Kupe), Janie Kim (Kupe) and Dalton Ma (Rutherford), with four making it through to the oral rounds.
The competition was intense and continued over a four and a half hour period.
By correctly spelling words such as ubiquitous, pernicious, and finally, reminisce, Richard Tao made it all the way through to the top five, qualifying for the finals in Wellington. Congratulations Richard and good luck for the finals.
