Macleans College student Highly Commended by DOC
Posted on June 29, 2020
Year 11 Macleans College student Liliana Mountfort (Rutherford House) is studying Art & Design this year.
Her course consists of fine art photography skills, cultural contexts and art practices associated with Kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection of the environment).
Liliana submitted two pieces of work to the Department of Conservation's (DOC) New Zealand Archaeology Week - Sharing our Stories. To celebrate Archaeology Week, DOC asked young people of Aotearoa to share their stories of a favourite historic place.
Liliana was highly commended for her art works of Motuihe Island - a recreation reserve controlled by DOC, located in the Hauraki Gulf. Motuihe Island was extensively settled by Maori, and farmed by Europeans for more than a century. It was the site of Auckland's quarantine station for 50 years, a prisoner of war camp, and a naval training base.
