Macleans College Participates in the first Ethics Olympiad
Posted on June 18, 2019
Recently two teams from Macleans College competed in the first Ethics Olympiad, which was held at Diocesan School for Girls.
The Ethics Olympiad was modelled on the Ethics Bowl, which has been running in the USA for over 25 years. Eighteen teams from as far afield as Hamilton competed in a format, which saw teams discussing cases that highlighted different ethical dilemmas. Points were awarded for identifying various points of view and engaging with their opponents in respectful dialogue.
Students found the event highly enjoyable and a fresh opportunity to discuss in-depth viewpoints with others on different ethical issues, an extension on philosophy and a more humanitarian branch of academia. In addition, the students had great fun meeting other people and having conversations with students from other schools.
The students who competed were Judy Fong (Snell House), Ellen Wang (Snell), Andrew Zeng (Snell), Aleena Waqar (Snell), Carlos Leyva Espinoza (Hillary), Romi Van Herwaarde (Hillary), Jayti Pattni (Rutherford), Kris Zhang (Kupe) and Tony Zhou (Batten).
