Macleans College orienteers return to Auckland Sprint Series

Posted on April 04, 2023

The Auckland School Sprint Orienteering Series returned this year after several years of cancellation due to COVID 19.

After four weeks of competing, 30 Macleans College students qualified for the Auckland Schools Sprint Orienteering final after securing top position in the Eastern Zone competition.

The final event took place at Long Bay College in the morning and AUT Akoranga Campus Northcote in the afternoon.

The Macleans College orienteers performed at their very best, to produce some fantastic results.

Ben Honey (Rutherford House) finished fifth, and Wesley Lau (Kupe) seventh in Intermediate Boys. Lily West missed the top ten, just shy by one second, to finish 11th.

Other achievements were as follows:

  • Junior Girls: Samadhi Samarathunga (Upham) 12th and Jeslyn Jiang (Upham) 17th
  • Junior Boys: Owen Liu (Snell) 11th
  • Intermediate Girls: Amelie Lianto (Snell) 20th
  • Senior Girls: Valerie Lau (Batten) 20th
  • Senior Boys: Andrew Chen (Te Kanawa) 14th and John Nguyen (Batten) 18th

Orienteering is a family of sports, where competitors use maps to complete navigational challenges in unfamiliar areas.
