Macleans College Model United Nations

The Macleans Model United Nations Conference (MacMUN) was held in Snell House on Saturday 12th August.

It attracted 58 delegates from all year levels. The conference gave the delegates a platform to improve their understanding about current global affairs and to voice their opinions on particular issues.

Model United Nations is an educational simulation aimed to teach young people vital skills including research skills, public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork as well providing them with an opportunity to expand their knowledge about international relations, diplomacy, the United Nations and how it functions as an organisation.

The day involved two committee sessions where students were allocated countries to represent and had intellectual debates on resolutions focused on the refugee crisis and nuclear non-proliferation.

The guest speaker was Simeon Brown, New Zealand’s youngest National candidate who is standing for the Pakuranga electorate in the upcoming general election. He spoke about the importance of youth engagement in today’s society and inspired this group to be further involved in the community.
