Macleans College came home with two awards at the recent SGCNZ University of Otago National Shakespeare Festival in Wellington, after being selected at the East Auckland Regional Competition in April.

The four days in Wellington included workshops with acting specialists, a tour of Parliament, advice from Shakespeare professionals, and watching many hours of unique interpretations of over twenty Shakespeare plays. Highlights included Lady Macbeth hand-sanitising against Covid-19, male witches on stilts and Romeo rapping with Mercutio.

Forty-eight groups from across the country competed at the Michael Fowler Centre, with Macleans College performing scenes from ‘The Comedy of Errors’. Despite this being the group’s first year competing and their student-directed piece going up against many other experienced, teacher-led groups, Macleans College students were given the award for Outstanding Physical Movement and for Best Recovery.

The Shakespeare group was directed by Year 11 student Sophia Xu and also included Emma Zhou, Rachana Rajeev, Anna Sandhu, Ish Sandhu, Samantha Spong and Jeslyn Zou, all from Hillary House.
