Macleans College fielded a strong team of ten boys and three girls to compete in the latest Secondary School Golf Competition.
Fifty five boys and thirty one girls from secondary schools around Auckland and North Harbour took part in the two day competition. Day One was held at the Howick Golf Course and the second day at the Pupuke Golf Course.
At the end of the first round the Co-captains Jarrod Millar (Mansfield House) and Jessica Huang (Batten) led the boys’ and girls’ section of the competition. They both returned a score of one under after 18 holes. A very impressive score. Henry Wang (Batten) – a member of Macleans College Premier Golf team - was not too far behind in third place, only three strokes behind the leader.
The second round was played on a cold and rain-threatening Monday morning at the Pupuke Golf Course in North Harbour. The leader board nerves affected Jarrod and Jessica. Jarrod’s tee shots quickly became snap hooks and affected his chance of winning the boys’ section, whereas few bad decisions in the second nine holes of the final round affected Jessica’s lead. She finished third in the girls’ section.
In the meanwhile Henry Wang played some superb golf in the last nine holes of the competition. He scored four birdies to return a score of two under for the last round. His score after thirty six holes was even par which was enough for him to win the boys’ section.
Other top ten performers in the competition were Jae Na (Mansfield) who came fifth, Jarrod Millar who placed seventh in the boys’ division, and Vivian Lu (Batten) who placed fifth in the girls’ division.
In the Nine Holes Golf Competition played during Term 1 of 2020, Macleans College had three teams playing in different divisions.
Team Three comprising of Oscar Cowley-Andrea (Te Kanawa), Tremain Croad (Upham), Terry Guo (Mansfield), Joshua Kingdon (Snell) and Daniel Qiu (Hillary) were undefeated during the league and were the winners of Division Three.
Team Two performed equally as well as Team Three with no loss and won the second division. The members of the team were Oliver Selley (Te Kanawa), Sally Lee (Upham), Daniel Ko (Mansfield) and Ivan Yu (Te Kanawa).
Team One was the top qualifier of the Auckland zone and was supposed to play against the runner up of North Harbour zone in the semi-final. Due to Covid-19 the semi-final and the final were cancelled. This team consisted of Jarrod Millar, Jessica Huang, Vivian Lu, Henry Wang, Stephen Liu (Mansfield) and Jae Na.
Team One is the best secondary golf team in New Zealand. They currently have the following trophies in the school cabinet:
- Auckland Secondary Schools’ Nine Holes Championship - 2019
- Auckland Teams’ Competition – 2018 and 2019
- Winner of New Zealand Secondary School Nationals Championship for 2018 and 2019
Individual achievements for 2020
Vivian Lu has retained a place in the New Zealand Golf academy. This gives her an opportunity to represent New Zealand in the international competitions. She finished in the top ten in a mixed men and women field in the Muriwai Open. She is also a member of the Auckland Women’s team which competes in inter-provisional tournaments.
Jae Na is member of the Auckland Men’s team who won the South Island Open.
