Macleans College girls return to Auckland Chess Championships

A group of nine Macleans College girls attended the Auckland Girls Chess Championships, held at the Mt Albert War Memorial Hall.
The girls who took part were Sarayu Grande (Kupe House), Sumida Grande (Te Kanawa), Zoey Lee (Mansfield), Kelly Ma (Upham), Anika Pattni (Rutherford), Isla Wang (Upham), Mandy Yuan (Mansfield), Yixin Zhang (Snell) and Gloria Zhu (Te Kanawa). They were supported by Mr Yang and Ms Lum.
Around 150 girls from Auckland and across New Zealand attended this annual event. It was impressive to see the hall filled with girls from the ages of five to 18 years old, enjoying the game of chess. Many enthusiastic parents and teachers were also in attendance to show their support.
Congratulations to Anika Pattni who won the Under-18 division.
This event has now been held for over a decade, and is designed to encourage girls to try chess.
