A group of 60 Year 12 Geography students recently took a two-day trip to Tongariro National Park.
Located in the central North Island, Tongariro National Park is home to three active volcanic mountains – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.
Accompanied by Mrs Glasgow-Palmer, Mr Paterson, Mr Hamilton, Mr Goodyer, Mr van Heerden and Ms Virk, the students went about collecting data for their geography research internal on the characteristics of the Tongariro Volcanic Centre. Equipment such as anemometers were used to collect wind speed measurements. Observations of soils and vegetation were taken as well as measurements of altitude, temperature and slope.
The highlight of the trip was seeing snow on the mountains and taking in the stunning vista of the volcanoes from the Desert Road.
