Macleans College forms bond with Wairoa College after Cyclone Gabrielle

After Cyclone Gabrielle had passed over New Zealand and students returned to Macleans College the importance of sympathy and service, a school value, became evident.

Batten House began a food drive to help the displaced families who were living in temporary shelters. Then the whole school took part in a mufti day to raise funds for Hawke’s Bay school Wairoa College.

Year 9 form class 9BRIB started to brainstorm other ways to help those hardest hit. The students and their English teacher Mrs Harding felt mixed emotions. They were all extremely grateful that Macleans College and the homes in their local community had survived the severe weather, but a feeling of helplessness and concern for fellow New Zealanders prevailed.

The students of 9BRIB wrote letters to other Year 9 students at Wairoa College. Their messages were filled with care, concern and support. The hope was to send a bit of sunshine after all the wet weather.

Last week 9BRIB were ecstatic to receive a bundle of responses from Wairoa College. The class was buzzing as they showed each other their cards and letters.

This is the beginning of a connection, which the students of 9BRIB hope will continue – thinking of others and acknowledging their challenges in the Macleans College way.
