Macleans College fencers finish Term 1 on a high

New Zealand Under 15 and Cadet Championships

Nine Macleans College fencers took part in the New Zealand Under 15 and Cadet Championships, held at Saint Kentigern College from 22-23 April.

A record seven medals were won in the Men’s Foil divisions, and Macleans College students achieved all four national championship titles. Many other fencers finished in the top eight. In the Under 17 Cadet Team Men’s Foil, Macleans College defeated the Tahiti national team to win the title.

U17 Foil Championships:

  • Eddy Zheng (Snell House) – Under 17 Individual gold (national champion) and Under 17 Team gold
  • Craig Chong (Upham) – Under 17 Individual silver, Under 17 Team bronze
  • Larry Lin (Batten) – Under 17 Individual bronze, Under 17 Team gold
  • Matt Wang (Mansfield) – Under 17 Individual 8th, Under 17 Team gold

U15 Foil Championships:

  • Larry Lin – Under 15 Individual gold (national champion), Under 15 Team gold
  • Stacy Chong (Snell) – Under 15 Individual bronze, Under 15 Team gold
  • Maxwell Chen (Upham) – Under 15 Individual 6th, Under 15 Team gold

G Ongley Memorial Tournament

At the G Ongley Memorial Tournament, held on 10 April at the Te Pai Event Centre, Eddy Zheng finished first place and Matt Wang second in the Men’s Foil.

Fencing North Under 17 Secondary Schools Competition

Six Macleans College fencers participated in the first Fencing North Under 17 Secondary Schools’ Competition over the weekend of 25-26 March.

A total of five medals were achieved. In the Men’s Under 17 Foil, Eddy Zheng earned a bronze medal and Larry Lin (who is still under 15) earned a bronze medal.

In the Men’s Under 17 Sabre, Davin Chan (Batten) brought home a bronze, and in the Ladies’ Under 17 Sabre, Gisele Lau (Te Kanawa) earned a silver medal with new comer Jenifer Kim (Rutherford) bringing home her first medal, a bronze.
