Macleans College fencers finish season with style

Two Macleans College students, Matt Wang (Mansfield House) and Larry Lin (Batten), fenced at the prestigious 2023 New Zealand National Open and Veteran Fencing Championships, held in Christchurch over Labour weekend.

This is the highest level of competition in New Zealand. Matt and Larry faced formidable competition, with 29 of the best fencers from around New Zealand participating in the event.

Matt's hard work and determination paid off as he secured a commendable 17th place in the individual event. Larry's performance secured an impressive eighth place; he was the youngest fencer amongst the top 16.  Larry also represented the North Regional team and achieved great success by winning all his bouts in the team event. He brought home a gold medal in the team event.

This is not just a testament to both student’s individual talent, but also to the teamwork and sportsmanship which Matt and Larry displayed. These results were a fantastic way to finish the 2023 fencing season.
