A group of Macleans College students proudly represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships, held over the July school holidays in Christchurch.
The championships started in 1990 in London and have since grown to include cadet (U17) and junior (U20) categories. Taking place every three years, the event attracts increasing participation from Commonwealth nations. Competitions are held in all three weapons (foil, épée, and sabre).
Held at the Christchurch Indoor Netball Centre, the championships provided the selected Macleans College fencers with a valuable platform to gain international experience and transition to senior-level competition.
Gisele Lau (Te Kanawa House), Larry Lin (Batten), Maxwell Chen (Upham) and Harry Zhou (Upham) competed against top athletes from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, South Africa, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia - demonstrating their skills and sportsmanship on the international stage.
The team achieved the following results:
- U17 Men's Foil: Larry Lin (27th) and Maxwell Chen (39th)
- U20 Men's Foil: Larry Lin (32nd)
- U17 Sabre: Maxwell Chen and Harry Zhou (26th)
- U20 Women's Sabre: Gisele Lau (20th)
Additionally, Larry and Gisele were part of the national teams in Men's Foil and Women's Sabre, respectively, showcasing their talent and dedication to the sport.
