Macleans College esports students come first at Armageddon
Posted on November 12, 2020
Over Labour weekend three Macleans College esports teams took part in the High School League of Legends tournament held at the Armageddon Expo in Auckland.
They competed against 17 teams from schools around the country in front of a live audience.
In a closely contested final, players from the Maclean's Premier 1 team snatched victory against Rangitoto College (a team which has won the Oceanic title three years in a row). This was a huge win for the team, and bodes well for their success heading into further inter-school tournaments next year.
Esports involves competitive play of video games between organised teams. In New Zealand alone, there are over forty schools with esports programmes. League of Legends is the most popular game, with over 80 million players worldwide. This game involves high levels of concentration, skill and teamwork as five players work together, each with a differing role (not dissimilar to basketball).
The Macleans College Esports Club is new this year, and was founded in order to facilitate and encourage the participation of students in the social, and competitive, aspects of playing video games. This club has not been formed to encourage the irresponsible playing of games, but instead looks to foster a healthier relationship between students and video games, whilst sharing their passion for play.
In the first year the esports club has claimed two national titles, and has podium placements in Oceanic tournaments across three disciplines (games). The esports club will be looking to continue its momentum heading into 2021.
