Macleans College continues to triumph in fencing
Posted on August 30, 2022
On Sunday 21 August, Macleans College's Sabre Fencing A team competed in the annual Fencing North Sabre Teams Competition.
The sabre is one of three disciplines of modern fencing. The sabre weapon is for thrusting and cutting with both the cutting edge and the back of the blade.
The competition involved a total of seven highly regarded teams throughout the wider Auckland region.
The Macleans College Sabre A team finished third equal overall, alongside Saint Kentigern’s B team.
The competition began at 8 am in West Auckland and with having no substitute fencer for the team, the three sabreurs competed with determination and resilience for the podium.
Congratulations to sabre captain Davin Chan of Batten House (silver medalist in U17 Men’s sabre tournament) and to the members Gisele Lau of Te Kanawa (silver medalist in the U15/U17 Women’s sabre tournament, also silver in the region’s Secondary Schools Championship for sabre fencing) and Ken Zhong of Hillary (bronze medalist in U17 Men’s sabre tournament).
The Sabre B team finished fifth. Well done to captain Allan Zhao (Kupe), Regina Yun (Upham) and Kyan Mar (Hillary). The club’s growing sabre team will enter two female sabreuses and three male sabreurs who will compete at the upcoming secondary schools national tournament in September.
The Macleans College Fencing club is also proud to acknowledge the on-going success in foil fencing this year.
The foilists have been working diligently to keep their placings on the podium. The school is privileged to have members of the Foil A team compete at the upcoming national tournament.
Best wishes to the following students: captain Andrew Yao (Upham), Eddy Zheng of Snell (bronze medalist in U17 foil fencing), Craig Chong (Upham) and Larry Lin of Batten (silver medalist in U17 foil fencing).
Eddy also received silver in the region’s secondary schools championships for foil fencing at an event held earlier this month.
Many thanks to the parents for their ongoing support, to the coaches Mr Ogg, Mr Evans and the manager on-site Mr Fourie.
