Macleans College Competes in National Skiing Competition

Posted on October 19, 2016

This year’s North Island Secondary School Ski Championship competition was held 12 – 13 September at Turoa.

The weather was perfect with plenty of snow the first day but the course was extremely icy for both our Junior girls and especially for our Senior boys which made it very challenging.

On day one Trinity Cattermoul (Hillary House), Penelope Kunzler (Kupe) and Isobel Forde (Te Kanawa) entered in the Junior Women’s Giant Slalom. The race set up was 16 gates in the Little Bowl area. Penelope skied 36.32 and Trinity 39.49 but unfortunately due to a fall Isobel was disqualified.

Elliot Kunzler (Kupe) and Stephen Elliott (Upham) entered the Senior Men’s Giant Slalom and along with over 20 other skiers were disqualified also due to the icy hard course.

On day two Trinity and Isobel completed paired race against skier with a similar time to the previous day with no visibility, and Penelope managed to win her race. Elliot, Stephen and Penelope were entered in the K2 Slope style race in the Mother Terrain Park. Penelope earned 2nd place in the Junior Women’s division.

The two days were a wonderful experience for the skiers in very difficult conditions.
