Macleans College Barbershop Chorus Wins Top Awards

Posted on August 01, 2016

On July 13 and 14 the Macleans College Macappella Barbershop Chorus with 51 singers, competed in the Pan Pacific Youth Harmony Festival held in Auckland City.

This was a combined competition with the Young Women In Harmony Regional Schools Competition. This year the groups were fortunate to have Mr Deke Sharon from The USA, who worked with the cast for the Pitch Perfect movies. He took several workshops over the two days of competition to assist the groups with their harmonies and performances.

The Macappella chorus was successful in taking 1st place in the Schools Regional Competition and 2nd place in the Pan Pacific 25 and under competition. They were awarded with the cup for the Schools competition and total prize money of $400.

As well as the chorus, there were two quartets, Eufouria and Surging Forth that competed in the Schools competition. The quartets were placed 1st and 2nd respectively. The members of the winning quartet were Eva Mountford (Rutherford House), Vyharie Sriravindrarajah (Upham), Sophia Wei (Kupe) and Nuch Srisa-An (Batten). The 2nd placed quartet members were Teresa Zhou (Kupe), Jiwoo Lee (Mansfield), Kathy Pu (Rutherford) and Danielle Tweedale (Rutherford).

These placings have qualified the chorus and the quartets to compete at the National competition in Wellington in September.

Quartet groups in the 25 and under section from Perth, Sweden and the USA were inspirational and entertaining.

Congratulations must go to Melody Lowe, the Macappella tutor, who works tirelessly to get the girls to this winning standard.
