Macleans College Academic Achievements 2022

Macleans College continues to enhance its reputation as one of the top academic high schools in New Zealand.
Each year a growing number of students enter select university programmes around the world. The school’s focus on academic rigour, a knowledge-rich curriculum and a structured pedagogy provide students with optimum learning conditions.
The academic programme is supported by a caring whānau house system and an extensive extra-curricular programme.

2022 NZQA Scholarship Results
- Macleans College students achieved 99 Scholarships.
- Two Macleans College students achieved an Outstanding Scholar Award ($15,000).
- Ten students achieved three or more Scholarships ($6,000).
2022 Dux
The Dux prize for 2022 is awarded to the Macleans College student who achieved the highest grades in the annual NZQA Scholarship examinations.
The Dux of Macleans College received the Allen McDonald Scholarship. This scholarship was established by the Macleans College Parent Teacher Association in recognition of the contribution of Allen McDonald, the second Principal of Macleans College, particularly with regard to the school’s scholastic achievement. The scholarship is worth $2,000.
The Macleans College Dux of 2022 and recipient of the Allen McDonald Scholarship is awarded to William Gao.
William achieved an Outstanding Scholar Award with Outstanding Scholarship in Physics and Earth & Space Science, and Scholarship in Chemistry, Statistics and Calculus.
He is a CAIE Top Achiever with a minimum of 2 A* Grades at A Level with A* Grades in Computer Science and English Literature and an A Grade at A Level in Further Mathematics.
In 2021 William’s achievements included 3 A* Grades at A Level in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, an A Grade in AS English Literature and a Cambridge High Achievement Award in AS Physics. He also achieved Scholarship with an Outstanding Scholarship in Physics and Scholarship in Calculus, Chemistry and Statistics.
In his time at the College William’s extra-curricular included Fencing, Clarinet in the Concert and Symphonic Bands, the Coding Club, NZ Informatics Olympiad training camps, NZ Chemistry Olympiad training camps, he placed third in NZPMC and was a student librarian. Other involvement included the Upham Big House Choir, Amnesty International, UN Youth Civics Education Club, NZ Programme Contests, NZ Engineering and Science Competitions and the NZ Secondary Schools Case Competition.
2022 Proxime Accessit
The Proxime Accessit for 2022 is awarded to the Macleans College student who achieved the second highest grades in the annual NZQA Scholarship examinations.
The Macleans College Proxime Accessit of 2022 is awarded to Allan Han.
Allan achieved Outstanding Scholarship in Chemistry and Scholarship in Biology, Earth and Space Science, Agriculture and Horticulture, Statistics, Calculus, and Health and Physical Education.
Allan Han also achieved the following results in his Cambridge examinations:
An A* Grade in A Level Chemistry and Mathematics, an A Grade in A Level Biology, and an A Grade in AS Physics and English Literature.
As a Year 11 student Allan achieved an A Grade in AS Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
In extra-curricular Allan is currently involved with the Senior Boys Volleyball and is a school prefect.
In 2022 he was a member of the World Scholars Cup Club, Volleyball Senior C Boys, Unicef group, UN Youth Civics Education Club, and a member of the Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band. Allan was also a member of the Premier Chess, Debating Premier Advanced and Badminton A Grade teams. Allan was a Peer Support Leader and completed his Duke of Edinburgh Silver and is currently working towards his Gold.
