Learning Support students visit Stardome Observatory and Planetarium

Posted on August 09, 2024

The Macleans College Learning Support class have recently been studying Matariki and the solar system.

To continue with this theme of learning, the class ventured on an educational trip to the Stardome Observatory and Planetarium to further expand their knowledge.

Eight students and two teachers started the trip by venturing on a journey up the historic One Tree Hill. In Social Studies class the students have also touched on the topic of Māori history and volcanoes, so the Māori pā's and volcanic craters were pointed out to the students along the way.

After a quick lunch, the group made their way to the Stardome. The visit started with 15 minutes of play-based learning in the Space Gallery and exhibits.

The group were then led to the planetarium where they watched a 360-degree educational video on the solar system - with topics including the sun, planets, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, as well as concepts of size, distance, time and formation. This was followed by a live tour of the celestial sights above Auckland and then a short feature show on life forces on other planets. Many of the students were particularly engaged in the video and asked a lot of relevant questions.

Thank you to Mrs White and Mr Henderson for facilitating a thoroughly enjoyable experience for this group of students.
