Junior Japanese learners enjoyed Trivia Quiz Night

Posted on November 11, 2020

On 6 November, two teams of Year 10 Japanese learners enjoyed the New Zealand Schools Japanese Trivia Championships held at Epsom Girls Grammar School.

The event was held in eight regions across New Zealand - Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wellington, Tasman/Nelson, Canterbury, Otago and Southland.

The evening aimed to provide students with an opportunity to use their cultural knowledge for a real purpose together with other students of Japanese that they would not normally have an opportunity to mix with.

One of the teams (Phoebe James of Upham House, Sue Li of Mansfield, Yeyoung Kim of Upham and Angela Lyu of Mansfield) was awarded with Best Dressed Team on the night. The boys’ team (Jeremy Wang of Hillary, Ke Hu of Mansfield, Jason Huang of Hillary and Jayden Lai of Kupe) challenged the questions and tried their very best during the competition. It was an enjoyable and pleasant experience for them. Both teams enjoyed the night with questions that came from outside their class learning, the students wore traditional kimonos and consumed Japanese refreshments.

The event was postponed due to COVID-19 this year but the New Zealand Association of Japanese Teachers made it happen for all Japanese learners throughout the country.
