Junior ESOL Trip to the Chelsea Bay Factory
Posted on September 17, 2018
The students from the ESOL Junior Immersion programme and their teachers enjoyed a trip to the Chelsea Bay Factory on Monday 10 September.
Chelsea Sugar Refinery commenced operation in 1884. It remains New Zealand’s only sugar refinery. While at the refinery, students took part in three activities. First, they completed a factory tour by train where they could see the production of their many products in action. The displays and videos presented along the way explained in detail the many processes required before they are bought in the supermarket. The students enjoyed some tasting at the end of the tour with the favourite being the honey and maple syrup.
They then explored the wonderful Interactive Room with activities of virtual baking, puzzles and worksheets. This room also included displays about the history of the factory and its products over the years.
Lastly, they all baked some chocolate chip biscuits under the guidance of the resident pastry chef. The kitchen facilities were excellent and seeing the students take home their biscuits and the pride they felt showed how the experience was of benefit.
Being able to offer new activities for the ESOL students to experience for the first time enhances not only language growth and knowledge, but also learning about Auckland and all it has to offer.
All enjoyed the day immensely. The Chelsea Bay Factory provides an excellent educational experience.
