Junior ESOL Trip to Auckland Zoo
Posted on July 04, 2018
On 27 June 67 students from the Junior ESOL programme visited the Auckland Zoo as a finale to a short study about New Zealand’s endangered animals and bugs.
The educators showed the students a variety of dead stuffed pests that were introduced to New Zealand but that are now causing a problem for the Kiwi and other native animals. Students learnt about the programme the zoo has in place to help protect kiwi birds from these predators. This programme ensures the eggs/chicks are safe until old enough to be introduced back into the wild once they have the strength to protect themselves.
Students went into the Kiwi bird enclosure and saw the birds foraging in the dark which is their natural habitat as they are nocturnal.
Additionally students visited the interactive Bugs Lab science exhibition. This was developed by the New Zealand Academy Award winning Weta Workshop and features massive 3-D bug models with interactive displays to enhance the students’ learning. Along with the arranged education programme, students went on a self-guided walk around the zoo to look at the other animals.
