Junior ESOL students experience Howick in the 1800s
Posted on April 12, 2022
ESOL Junior Immersion students visited the Howick Historical Village last week.
The village is a replica of an early 1800s settlement and has been developed over a period of time using original buildings that were rescued from the surrounding area.
The students were shown an original trunk, and its likely contents that a family would have brought with them on their more than three month journey by ship to New Zealand. The students also worked in groups to assemble a wooden trolley and then enjoyed having fun riding them just as children from the 1800s would have had. Similarly, they played with the outdoor games such as stilts, quoits, block walking, diablo and wooden slalom plank walking. The students enjoyed the novelty of these games which was a unique experience.
The day was very successful and enjoyed by all.
