Junior ESOL students entertained at Sheepworld

Junior ESOL students recently spent the day at Sheepworld, north of Warkworth, learning about sheep farming in New Zealand.
The Dog and Sheep Show was a presentation to show how a typical sheep farm in New Zealand operates. The students were impressed with the ability of the farm dogs to round up a whole flock of sheep, with their only command being a whistle.
Two lucky students helped draft the sheep which involved opening and closing the gate very quickly in order to sort them into different groups. Following the sheep shearing demonstration, students were given a small piece of wool to take home.
Brave students ventured to feed the lambs and many were surprised at the strength of the lambs as they suckled on the milk bottle.
After lunch, the students were able to walk around the farm and feed the animals with a bag of food given to them on arrival. There was an array of interesting animals including ponies, donkeys, pigs, alpaca and even a baby possum.
It was a worthwhile experience enjoyed by all the students and teachers.
