Two teams of Macleans College Year 10 Japanese students attended the annual trivia championships which was held across eight regions of New Zealand on the evening of Friday 21 June.

Jessie McAra-Jiramongkolchai (Upham House), Lachlan Steele (Rutherford), Enming Pei (Mansfield) and Drish Danny (Snell) of team one finished first place in the Auckland region and second in New Zealand. The same team also won a best costume prize; their creativity was appreciated by the judges.

Natasha Harris (Snell), Kelly Kong (Snell), Avril Toh (Snell) and Alice Zhang (Snell) of team two achieved a commendable high score.

The Consulate-General of Japan, Mr Shinji Matsui, was in attendance and presented prizes on the night. Both teams thoroughly enjoyed being quizzed on the topics of sport/festivals, pop culture, geography, food and daily life.

The evening aims to provide students with an opportunity to use their cultural knowledge in a real-life setting, together with other students of Japanese that they would not normally have an opportunity to mix with. The end goal is for students to acquire extra motivation to continue with their studies of Japanese at school and beyond. The evening was organised by the New Zealand Association of Japanese Language Teachers (NZAJLT).
