Year 10 student Gisele Chong (Kupe House) participated in the 2023 Young Mathematical Story Authors (YMSA) competition earlier this year.

The YMSA competition is an annual international competition, which encourages young mathematics learners from eight to 15 years old to create their own mathematical story picture books.

Gisele’s story titled Whale’s Oceania Odyssey is about an oceanic voyage by Azure the whale who has been captured and raised by humans. The story features the use of trigonometry and compass bearings to help guide Azure home. Gisele stated that her inspiration came from books, especially the world of the deep described in Chinese myths that are retold in novels.

Over 745 students, across 73 schools submitted entries for the 2023 competition. Gisele’s work is one of eight entries around the world shortlisted for the 2023 Cindy Neuschwander Award (the 12-15 years old category).
