Culture celebrated through cuisine: Intercultural Food Festival 2023
Posted on June 19, 2023
The annual Macleans College Intercultural Food Festival was held recently, with the school’s intercultural clubs showcasing a wide variety of different cultures through various cuisines from all over the world including the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and beyond.
Groups from the Intercultural Committee came together and sold delicacies such as milk tea to Korean hot dogs and Aagepan to mango lassi. Every corner of the festival unveiled a new chapter in the culinary journey, where each intercultural club crafted an authentic experience. Students from around the school enjoyed the diversity shown through the wide variety of cuisines.
Furthermore, a highly successful intercultural mufti day took place, where students were encouraged to dress up from their respective cultures or in the colours of their national flags. The school saw a wide range of different clothing, including cheongsams, panjabis, saris, kimonos, and more - a true attestation to the diversity at Macleans College.
Intercultural President Shafquat Tabeeb (Mansfield House), Vice-President Lily Kim (Mansfield) and Allan Han (Batten), along with members of the executive team Cecilia Ma (Mansfield) and Leo Mamedov (Kupe) coordinated and managed the smooth running of the popular event.
The event also featured two musical groups that delivered outstanding performances. The Saxy Men (Senior Saxophone Quartet) comprising of Quinn Zhong (Upham), Ethan Zhang (Kupe), Adrian Chan (Te Kanawa) and Leo Mamedov (Kupe), played an exquisite Japanese song of My Neighbor Totoro Medley. Adding to the cultural performances, a duet featuring Joshua Leevers (Kupe) and Joshua Ho (Te Kanawa) showcased two amazing performances of Cupid and Wonderful.
Many thanks to all the teachers in charge of the Intercultural Committee for their generous aid and support in the planning of the event. A special thanks to Mrs Hoshino for playing a key role in the execution of the Intercultural Food Festival.
All proceeds will be donated to Multicultural New Zealand, an organisation dedicated to fostering the hauora and kotahitanga among diverse communities, while also providing invaluable assistance to migrants and refugees in their integration processes.
