Inaugural Spanish Day

Last Friday 25 November the Year 9 Spanish students enjoyed a day where they were immersed in Hispanic culture.
The morning involved watching two documentaries, one about Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras and another one about Colombia. They are part of the Television New Zealand series Intrepid Journey. Two New Zealand celebrities, in this case Anika Moa and Pam Corkery visited these countries to discover their culture and their people.
After watching the documentaries the students had to answer a questionnaire on each of them and won prizes, if successful.
The students then enjoyed a churro break followed by a Spanish culture trivia quiz. The questions covered topics such as the Moor invasion of Spain in 711, football, the arts and Capitals and flags of Spanish speaking countries around the world.
The afternoon involved a flamenco workshop with the professional dancer Maria Snijders performing for the students. They then had the opportunity to learn a variety of skills that are part of the flamenco. They were able to dress in Sevillana traditional clothing and ended the day with El Baile del Panuelo, a traditional dance where the public form a circle and a handkerchief is passed around. The person holding the Panuelo must go to the centre of the circle and dance.
