Hillary Challenge Adventure Race

On June 18th, eight Macleans College students participated in the Hillary Challenge 6 hour Adventure Race held in Rotorua.
The event took place over six hours and consisted of intense forest navigation, a three hour on-foot rogaine, a demanding 25km mountain bike and team problem solving. It rained for the full six hours making the ground very slippery and muddy.
The team did remarkably placing 13th in the North Island Competition despite suffering a mechanical malfunction midway through the 25km mountain biking leg. The team trained hard for months for the event and improved in places from last year which was their first time in the demanding race.
The team consisting of four Year 11 students are keen to learn from this experience for future years of competition. The team was Gemma Black (Upham House), Emma Hjorth (Mansfield), Charlotte Smaill (Hillary), Kathryn Zhou (Upham), Jonathan Li (Snell), Cole Brown (Snell), Ethan Verner (Kupe) and Matthew Wilson (Kupe).
The adventure racing team is very proud of them and looking forward to another three hour rogaine taking place in the same area next month.
