Gold, silver and bronze at Secondary Schools Fencing Teams Championships

Posted on August 11, 2023

Macleans College fencers recently competed in Fencing North’s Secondary Schools Sabre and Epee Teams Championships.

The stakes are high, as the top two teams in each event are nominated to represent Auckland at the National Championships in Wellington later this month.

This is the first time Macleans College have entered a men’s epee team. The team consisted of Captain Sheldon Kou (Upham House), Eddy Zheng (Snell) and newcomers to epee, Matt Wang (Mansfield) and Larry Lin (Batten). Out of nine participants, Macleans College walked away with bronze medals, narrowly losing in the semifinals 42-45.

Six teams participated in the sabre events. Gisele Lau (Te Kanawa) was part of a composite women’s team, who won gold medals. The Macleans College boys’ team achieved silver medals. The boys were Captain Davin Chan (Batten), Ken Zhong (Hillary) and Eddy Zheng.

Special mention needs to be given to Eddy Zheng, who stepped in at the last minute to replace team members who fell ill. Eddy has never fenced sabre before and was literally fencing both epee and sabre at the same time, running from piste to piste, changing equipment and clothing constantly. Eddy has now won gold in the men’s team foil, silver in men’s team sabre and bronze in men’s team epee. An impressive achievement!
