A group of Year 9 and 10 Ethics Olympiad students represented Macleans College at the North Island Middle Schools Ethics competition.
The students participated in two teams in a competition of four heats and held ethical discussions with eight cases. The student discussions were well-structured and offered insightful knowledge of each case.
The Macleans College team of Syed Abdullah (Upham House), Amy Zuo (Batten), Ayan Shah (Upham), Areeba Zabrina (Hillary) and Peyton Kennerley (Mansfield) performed extremely well and were subsequently awarded with a gold medal. This result means that Macleans College has been invited to participate in the International Final in February next year.
The Macleans College team of Behrad Etemadipour (Batten), Emily Chan (Kupe), Senith Ranawaka (Upham) and Nathan Rao (Rutherford) also performed strongly. These students were competing in a group of schools who were all very close in grades to the top three schools. At the conclusion of the competition they were awarded with an honourable mention.
The Ethics Olympiad provides students with a unique opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration and communication. It is designed to get students thinking, talking and working together on some of the toughest moral issues of today.
