Gamers win Gold at Auckland Regionals
Posted on August 05, 2021
The New Zealand High School Esports League held its regional championship playoffs recently, with the top teams around Auckland clashing across three different gaming disciplines - League of Legends, Valorant and Rocket League.
The finals took place at the Media Design School in front of a live audience. Macleans College was the only school to field students in all three finals.
The day started with the Rocket League Premier 1 team coming second after a nail biting series against Mount Albert Grammar that went the distance. Year 12 student, Daniel Cieplinski (Kupe House), then played alongside a dominant team from Rangitoto College to win gold in swift fashion. Lastly, the Macleans College Premier 1 League of Legends team put the rest of the national field on notice with a crushing victory over Mount Albert Grammar, taking first place in front of a lively crowd of Macleans College students.
All three teams will progress to the National competition, which begins on 5 August, with the finals being held in-person on 21 August at the Media Design School in Wynyard Quarter. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend for a day of free giveaways and fun.
