Adam Mellin (Batten House Captain 2016) and Bastian Busch (Snell House 2012-2016) received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award certificate from the Governor-General, The Rt Hon Patsy Reddy, at a ceremony held at King’s College on 9 July.
Adam and Bastian started on their four-year Duke of Edinburgh journey in 2013 when they were in Year 10 at Macleans College, at the time when the programme was run by Mr and Mrs Bungay. Completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award involved performing services to the community; planning and undertaking tramps in various locations such as the Hunua, Waitakere and Kaimai Ranges, the Tongariro Crossing (including climbing to the top of Mount Ngauruhoe) and the Kepler track in the South Island; learning new skills; partaking in physical and sporting activities and completing a 10-day adventurous journey.
Their adventurous journeys were completed on separate voyages of the Spirit of Adventure sailing ship. Adam’s voyage was from the Bay of Islands to Auckland and Bastian’s voyage took in the Hauraki Gulf, including Great Barrier Island.
Adam and Bastian both highly recommend the Duke of Edinburgh Award and thank Macleans College for the opportunity given to them by offering the programme as part of the school’s extra-curricular activities.
