Former Macleans College students share their overseas study experiences

Posted on September 12, 2023

Life is a do-it-yourself project. That was the message from two former Macleans College students who returned to share their experiences of studying overseas with interested students during lunchtime last week in the auditorium.

Tony Su (Kupe House 2017 – 2021) outlined the structure of the pure economics degree he is completing at University College London and the employment opportunities such a qualification may provide him in the future. With a particular interest in data science and artificial intelligence, it would appear Tony’s employment possibilities are endless.

Besides becoming far more independent and self-sufficient, one of the key advantages of studying in London has been the ease of travelling to other countries and immersing himself in their diverse cultures.

Annika Lee (Snell House 2017 – 2021) continued this theme of travel by sharing some of the opportunities her course at Sydney University have already provided her with, including a summer school in Singapore and an exchange semester at King’s College London that she will be starting in a couple of weeks. Annika is completing a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce with a Marketing major.

Both gave insights into the application process and stressed the importance of being able to show universities your interest in subjects beyond the classroom, such as participation in competitions and reading widely.

Both Tony and Annika also mentioned the invaluable opportunities provided by Macleans College including the leadership opportunities the school’s extensive extra-curricular programmes offered students. The peer support and camp leader responsibilities were also seen as opportunities to develop and demonstrate initiative, leadership and effective teamwork.

So, the message is, grab the opportunities as they arise with both hands. You never know where they may lead you in the future.

Macleans College wish Tony and Annika continued success in their studies and travels.
