Equestrian success for Macleans College

Posted on December 15, 2020

After a year of cancelled events the Macleans College Equestrian Team was finally able to compete after the end of the school year.

They did this in style with the Macleans A Team taking out first place of the B Level in the Auckland Secondary Schools Eventers Team Challenge. A team of six riders represented the school at this competition which is a part of the biggest eventing competition on the New Zealand calendar, the Puhinui International Horse Trials, held on Friday 11 December.

The schools competition is a derby event where riders compete over a course of both show jumping and cross country jumps aiming to complete the course, both clear and in an optimum set time.  The Macleans A Team was made up by Sam Keane (Batten House), Zalia Tornquist (Snell), Hayley Newington (Hillary) and Nathan Poole (Mansfield). Individual placings for these riders included 2nd place for Hayley, 7th place for Zalia and 8th place for Sam. Nathan who had trouble at one fence in the first round produced a lovely clear in his second round.

Dylan Van Wyk (Hillary) and Charlotte Owen (Snell) represented the school in a composite team. Dylan completed two clear rounds and was placed first individually in the B Level of the competition. Charlotte rode in the C Level of the competition and produced two strong clear rounds.  This saw the composite team placed 5th overall in their division.
