Environment Group Plant Native Trees on Motuihe

Eight hundred native tree seedlings were planted on pest-free Motuihe Island/Te Motu-a-Ihenga in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana by Macleans College Environment group students and teachers recently.

The group of forty seven students and four teachers took a chartered ferry from Half Moon Bay so conservation rehabilitation could continue to re-establish the natural environment on the historical island.

Macleans teachers and students have been associated with caring for the island for over ten years. The island is part of a group that protect the Hauraki Gulf and is clearly visible from the Macleans College campus.

Over the years, the rehabilitation project has made milestones with the students of the Environment Group, such as the introduction of the New Zealand native Tuatara, Pacific geckos, shore skinks and little spotted kiwi birds.
