EnviroMania Event run by the Kaitiaki Club (Enviro Group)
Posted on September 20, 2019
On Thursday 12 September students from the Kaitiaki Club ran a well-attended event in the amphitheatre to highlight the importance of environmental issues.
Stalls were designed to be educational and entertaining. The Travelwise group had a ‘slow’ bike race whilst a representative from Auckland Transport brought simulation goggles for students to experience the lack of vision, balance and control if inebriated. Solar car kits were also available to promote awareness of energy alternatives.
Virtual reality goggles were available for students and offered an experience of New Zealand ecosystems to raise awareness of our unique biodiversity. The Principal, Mr Hargreaves spent some time exploring the pristine waters of the Hauraki Gulf from the school amphitheatre.
A bake sale, body butter, soap and wax food wraps were sold to raise money for environmental causes. The body butter, soap and wax wraps are made by some of the groups at school using natural products. The beeswax wraps were sold in an effort to reduce single-use plastic waste. Purchasers, both staff and students, were encouraged to vote for a suitable cause and money will now go towards protection of the endangered Maui’s dolphin and efforts to stop fires in the Amazon forest.
In a fitting gesture during Māori Language week, the Enviro Group has officially changed its name to the Kaitiaki Club. Kaitiaki means guardian or trustee, usually in the context of the environment.
