Enthusiastic Students Tackle Bridge A Point Tournaments

Several students who won the Auckland-Northland Secondary Schools competition in 2015 have joined the Howick Bridge Club to further develop their skills.

The students played in a number of inter-school tournaments in 2015, attended a Youth Bridge weekend run by New Zealand Bridge, and made up a third of the field in the first NZB Youth Tournament held in Hamilton last September. Of those who have joined the Howick Bridge Club, a number have more than held their own against experienced players. In the recent Holiday Bridge tournament, Vincent He (Hillary House) and Zachary Yan (Upham) played in all four sessions.

Eddy Tan (Upham) and William Han (Upham) took part in the Waitemata 5A Open Pairs, scoring 57.84% and taking home a session prize. The field contained many international players, some playing with their international partners. Howick Club player, Neil Beckett, who is heavily involved in school bridge in the area, commented:

“Eddy and William bring passion, vitality, energy and an eagerness to compete at the highest level and given that they are only in Year 10 and 11 at College, the future of Bridge in NZ will be in good hands. They are a credit to Youth Bridge, Macleans College and members of the Howick Bridge Club.”

The students are coached by Mathematics teacher, Lance Bowden.
