Engineering Week: Senior Students visit Devonport Naval Base
Posted on August 24, 2018
As part of Engineering Week, eleven senior students from Macleans College had the opportunity of visiting The Royal New Zealand Navy at HMNZS Philomel in Devonport.
The students were made extremely welcome by the Navy personnel, and were given a tour of HMNZS Wellington, including visiting the bridge during exercises.
They were invited to participate in a number of activities that involved use of their science and engineering skills, such as building and operating a radar set, inspecting the latest weaponry and using the very latest training simulators to pilot a ship around the Waitemata harbour.
Many serving Navy personnel took the time to work with the students, showing them how to follow their chosen career paths within the Defence Forces and explaining the worldwide nature of life in the modern Navy.
Following a recruitment presentation and a buffet lunch, the students left with a better idea of Navy life, the modern role of the RNZN in the South Pacific and beyond and the large range of career options available.
