Economics students tour Chelsea Sugar Factory

Macleans College students who study Level 3 Economics recently spent a day at the Chelsea Sugar Factory in Birkenhead on Auckland’s North Shore.

The factory was established in 1884 and is New Zealand’s main source of sugar products for both home use and in the food and beverage industry.

The trip provided students with the opportunity to experience a real-life production process, to identify reasons for the factory’s location and to examine constraints imposed on Chelsea’s production process by both local and central government.

The students completed a factory tour and tested their knowledge in the factory’s interactive zone. The highlight for most, however, was the hour-long baking session with Chelsea’s in-house patisserie chef. Delicious chocolate chip and yoyo biscuits were carefully packaged and taken home to share with their families.
