Early Season Success Leads to NZ Fencing Selection
Posted on May 25, 2018
During the May school holidays, five Macleans Students attended the New Zealand U15 and Cadet (U17) Fencing Nationals in Wellington with the aim of qualifying for the New Zealand Team to compete in Australian National Championship in the July school holidays.
The competition was tough with all New Zealand’s leading fencers fighting for places on the National age group team. The fencers were all very consistent but the highlights of the weekend were Howard Wu (Mansfield House) taking out 3rd place in the U17 Sabre competition (even though he is still eligible to fence in the U15 category) and Nelson Lee (Snell) placing 1st in the U17 Sabre competition.
Leading on from this competition and early session performances, all five students have been selected in the New Zealand age group team. Kevin Hou (Upham), who could not attend the competition as he was involved in a Chemistry Olympiad training camp, has also been selected based on his No. 1 New Zealand U17 sabre ranking and consistently high early session performances.
Representing New Zealand in U15 Foil, U15 Sabre, U17 Foil and U17 Sabre is Howard Wu.
Representing New Zealand in U17 Sabre are Kevin Hou and Nelson Lee.
Representing New Zealand in the U17 Foil and U17 Sabre are Donovan Wu (Rutherford), Alex McGuire-Barnes and Nick McGuire-Barnes (both Te Kanawa).
