Drama students experience the Pop Up Globe
Posted on March 17, 2017
On Monday 6 March, the Year 11 NCEA and IGCSE Drama students attended the Pop Up Globe production of Henry V.
Within a few scenes the students were well and truly living the experience of standing in the yard as the commoners did centuries ago. At the first gush of blood they were hooked and after that they were all swept away by the canny cast of characters from the foils to the royals.
Explosions, hangings, clever, witty, bawdy repartée, slit throats, familial tragedy, declarations of love, conspiracies and betrayals: there was something for everyone.
As Einstein said, “The only source of knowledge is experience,” and seeing Shakespeare’s words come to life through the masterful performances of these passionate, irrepressibly enthusiastic actors was a wonderful opportunity to support the students’ learning in both practical and external examinations.
Playing witness to the practicalities and challenges of producing a theatre piece in this authentic working space provided invaluable insights for everyone.
Our grateful thanks to Dr Luton and Ms Walsh for making this trip possible.
