On Tuesday 11 August, ten Macleans College badminton players went to the Auckland Badminton Hall in Gillies Avenue to compete in the Secondary Schools Individuals and Doubles Championship.

Several games were played throughout the day at Junior (under 16) and Senior (under 19) levels.

Ana Dahiya (Mansfield House) and Phoebe Yang (Batten) won gold medals in the Junior Girls’ Doubles. The Macleans College Junior Boys’ Doubles pair, Joseph Wu (Te Kanawa) and Eric Lu (Rutherford) came first in their category too, receiving gold medals.  Macleans College have retained first place in the Junior Boys’ Doubles for the past two years.

Year 13 students Christian Cook (Batten) and Roy Zhao (Mansfield) were narrowly defeated 31-30 in an extremely close contest against an Auckland Grammar School senior doubles’ pair who were runners up in this category.  Best Kingthong and Caroline Chen (both from Batten House) came third equal in the senior girls’ doubles. Caroline Chen, a Year 9 student, should be commended for playing in a tough senior doubles category alongside her Year 12 doubles partner, Best Kingthong.

Credit to Billy Li (Snell) and Kylin Li (Rutherford) who competed in the arduous Junior Boys’ Singles category.  A high level of effort was demonstrated by all the players on a very challenging day.
