Devonport Naval Base visit
Posted on November 11, 2019
On Wednesday 6 November ten students accompanied by Ms Jamieson from the Careers Department visited the Naval Base in Devonport for the day.
The students had a great time being shown around the HMNZS Canterbury, the sea training site, as well as the Engineering and Electronic Technician workshops. There are many fascinating roles within the Navy and all the students were greatly encouraged to pursue their pathways into the Defence Force after being regaled with various stories of travel and adventure from some of the sailors. A definite highlight was being shown around the HMNZS Canterbury, where they were taken from the top of the Bridge, throughout the ship and down into the cargo area.
Major James Hannah, a Regular Force NZDF Dental Officer who works at Fleet (the Devonport Navy Base) organised the visit. He has a connection to Upham House as his father was the Doctor that helped save Charles Upham’s life when Upham was badly wounded in WW2, and both men were POWs.
James represents the Upham family at Upham House ANZAC Service each year, having been a close friend of the late patron of Upham House, Amanda Upham.
