Detector dog Rani visits Macleans College Year 13 Police Studies students

The Year 13 Police Studies class recently received a visit from two important New Zealand Customs Service personnel – Rani, a famous detector dog, and her dog handler Jo.
Rani, a very friendly canine, is well-trained to spot cash, drugs and firearms. She is based mainly at the Auckland Airport, International Mail Centre or cargo terminals. She often features in the New Zealand TV series, Border Patrol.
A presentation by Jo outlining the work carried out by detector dogs, their achievements and the requirements to enter this pathway fascinated the students. Rani then delighted them with her detective skills, sniffing out and indicating bags that contained suspicious items.
This experience provided students with an opportunity to explore careers related to the New Zealand Police and to understand how the two organisations liaise together towards successful outcomes.
