Connections and celebrations at Whānau Hui Evening
Posted on June 15, 2022
On Wednesday 8 June Macleans College invited parents and whānau of the Māori and Pasifika students to the Hui Whānau/Fono in order to connect, celebrate and create partnerships between kura and home.
The evening opened in karakia in Tongan by Maria Tukunga (Upham House), followed by a Mihimihi whaikorero by Jaymes Papa (Hillary) and a waiata tautoko by our leaders.
Tumuaki Mr Hargreaves and Mr Wilkie from the Board of Trustees welcomed whānau and staff, followed by the singing of the waiata, Tiaho Mai Ra.
Whānau were also introduced to Ms Rose, Mr Sarah and our new Deputy Principal Ms Tuialii. Both students and teachers talked about their aspirations for the year and their plans for the kura.
The evening was student led by Grace Pickering (Te Kanawa), Jordan Kingham (Snell), Ezra Nichol (Hillary), Grace Mascarenhas (Hillary), Kirisitina Fata (Kupe) and Faithfulness Saumani (Kupe). These amazing students discussed what they want for Māori and Pasifika students at Macleans College and let whānau know how they could be involved which was inspirational.
Following the formal part of the evening was the opportunity for whakawhanaungatanga, making connections and building relationships, while enjoying some kai. Sharing kai was a great way to mix and mingle and to get to know one another. Thank you to the students who helped Staffroom Manager Miss Johnson in the kitchen and for the beautiful feast she put on for us.
Thank you to all of those involved in this special evening, to the whānau for supporting the school, to Mr Wilkie and Mr Hargreaves for their presence and to the staff members who came to support our students and their kaupapa.
