Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra take KBB Gala honours

The annual KBB Music Festival was held from 12 - 17 August at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell.
The largest instrumental festival in New Zealand took place over six days, hosting over 4,000 student performers.
Five Macleans College instrumental groups performed throughout the week in the Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra sessions. The Symphonic Band led by Ms Huang, Sinfonietta led by Mrs Johnston, Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra led by Dr Miles and an entirely student-led Chamber Orchestra.
The Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra were ranked amongst the very top groups in their respective categories and won the right to perform at the Gala Concerts held on Saturday afternoon and evening. The Chamber Orchestra also impressed the judges with their performance of the 1st movement from Josef Suk’s Serenade for Strings, winning the special award for the Outstanding Performance of a Romantic Work.
Macleans College Concert Band
The overall results saw Concert Band receive a gold award, a silver award for the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and bronze awards for both Symphonic Band and Sinfonietta.
Several Macleans students were also selected for the Honours Orchestra and Jazz Band who performed on Friday evening under conductors Vincent Hardaker and Paul Norman. The honours representatives were: Olivia Liu (Kupe House), Dalton Ma (Rutherford), Ethan Zhang (Kupe), Joshua Chan (Mansfield), Catherine Yuan (Batten), Yuke Chan (Rutherford) and Leo Mamedov (Kupe).
